$45 ribeyes graze at Texas ranch

Jose Antonio Elias Calles, a veterinarian and president of the company that owns the herd of Akaushi breed of cattle in the background, is shown, Thursday, June 14, 2007, near Gonzales, Texas. The brood has grown to over 5,000 from the three bulls and eight cows that arrived from Japan in 1994. Calles'' company, HeartBrand Beef, now has enough animals grazing in south Texas to market purebread American-raised Japanese beef to restaurants and consumers. Even by the standards of Texas where beef is no trivial matter rancher Jose Antonio Elias Calles has coddled his cattle.
